Gitga’at First Nation

Laxgalts’ap, “Old Town,” is located north of the remote village of Hartley Bay where the Gitga’at first nation live today. Old Town is considered the heart of the Gitga’at, where they lived for generations. The historical ecology of the Gitga’at is written on the landscape, which is bounded at the mouths of the Quaal and Kitkiata rivers [in British Columbia] by countless petroglyphs that give spiritual potency to this place. With the support of the Swift Foundation we have been able to conduct initial interviews with Elders who were born and raised in Old Town, conduct historical research and engage youth with cultural knowledge transfer.
