The Andean Alliance for Sustainable Development Alianza Andina, supports agriculture initiatives in campesino farming communities and provides experiential learning opportunities in the highlands of Peru’s Andes. AASD’s work with campesino communities since 2010 has included greenhouse construction, capacity-building, and hands-on workshops that focus on agroecological methodology. This methodology relies on utilizing traditional knowledge, community-led initiatives, and the collective insight and intelligence of farmer-to-farmer education to ensure cultures and environments are sustained and respected.

AIDA is a nonprofit environmental law organization formed in 1998 by law groups in Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru and the U.S. that works across the Americas to defend threatened ecosystems and the human communities that depend on them. Attorneys and scientific advisors provide free legal advice, education, scientific support, and advocacy to assist communities, local movements, national organizations, governments and international organizations. AIDA’s counts among its many achievements: saving the homes of 25,000 people by stopping a massive dam project in Mexico, protecting thousands of people in Peru by forcing a U.S.-owned smelter to reduce toxic emissions, protecting the freshwater supply of millions of people by compelling Columbia’s government to ban mining in high-altitude wetlands, protecting endangered green sea turtles by reforming Costa Rican law, saving an ancient native forest in Chile from clear-cutting, and strengthening the human right to a healthy environment in Mexico’s Constitution.

Awasqa (“weave” or “knitting” in Kichwa)/the Green Network Project has worked since 2018 to create an international community journalism network by breaking linguistic barriers between Indigenous communities in the Northern and Southern hemispheres. By sharing stories of communities and their residents that are among the most impacted yet by the climate change crisis, Awasqa shares articles recounting the resilience of peoples addressing a range of issues to foster a new vision of hope and deep intergenerational change.

The CLIMA Fund is a collaboration between Global Greengrants Fund, Grassroots International, Thousand Currents, and Urgent Action Fund for Women’s Human Rights — a like-minded community of philanthropists funding grassroots movements to cool the planet by forging transitions from extractive agriculture and energy production to agroecological systems and equitable energy generation.

CLARA member organizations are leaders in movements supporting climate justice, rainforest and temperate/boreal protection, and land-rights for Indigenous peoples and communities and their agroecological movements. They are also active in climate change science, ensuring the proper accounting of greenhouse gas emissions. CLARA representatives have participated in each of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) Conference of the Parties negotiations over the last decade.

The Foundation connects the national philanthropic community to the Colorado Plateau’s Native American tribes, the sovereign nations that oversee over one-third of the plateau’s lands. GRAIN is a small international nonprofit organization that works to support small farmers and social movements in their struggles for community-controlled and biodiversity-based food systems.

Groundswell International is a global partnership of local NGOs and civil society organizations that strengthen rural communities in Africa, the Americas, and Asia to build healthy farming and food systems. Farmers test ecological farming principles and practices, adopting those that work best on their farms and then they spread these approaches to other farmers. Groundswell also helps them create stronger local markets and improve their incomes. It also works with allied organizations to create policy strategies that reduce poverty and ensure that people live and eat well.

Honor the Earth’s mission is to create awareness and raise and direct funds for Native environmental issues for the survival of sustainable Native communities. Founded in 1993, it has regranted over $2 million to more than 200 Native American communities. Efforts include supporting movements to stop mining and extraction projects that are threatening Indigenous lands and waters, protecting food sovereignty, developing community infrastructure to ensure environmental and social justice, and strengthening renewable energy systems.

KTK-BELT’s Vertical University project utilizes the intergenerational knowledge of Indigenous farmers and others in the region to educate Nepal’s youth about the 6,600 flowering plant species, 800 bird species, and 180 mammals that are found in eastern Nepal. KTK-BELT staff partner with the farmers to deepen place-based skills in sustainable technology, crafts, and medicinal plants; create flora and fauna databases; and expand sustainable livelihood opportunities.

The Wet’suwet’en are a First Nation’s people who live in the northwestern Central Interior of British Columbia. The Office of the Wet’suwet’en, representing the Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs, has been taking steps to enhance Clan engagement related to land use and natural resource decisions.

The Organization for the Development and Common Good of the Iskonawa People is a nascent Indigenous organization which brings together descendants of a group of Iskonawa, one of the at least 20 uncontacted Amazonian tribes of Peru.

SATIIM was created in 1997 when the Maya and Garifuna communities of southern Belize discovered that the government had turned their ancestral lands into a national park. Shortly after the government took control of the land in 1994, oil drilling preparations began in this unique ecosystem that was a protected area recognized by the RAMSAR Convention on Wetlands. SATIIM later received support to file lawsuits that resulted in court rulings affirming Maya Customary Land titles and requiring the government of Belize to establish Maya communal land titles. SATIIM is working with Maya communities to create the first replicable, participatory mapping and demarcation process in Belize. These extensive efforts promote and protect the rights of Indigenous Peoples and safeguard the ecological integrity of the Sarstoon Temash Region.

The Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition was founded in 2004 in British Columbia by a diverse group of people living and working in the Skeena River watershed, home to Canada’s second largest wild salmon migration. The coalition is working to develop long-term stewardship plans for the region; contributing to research of wildlife, water quality, and cultural heritage resources; organizing meetings between regional/provincial governments, corporate developers, and local communities; and providing educational programs and gatherings for stories, music, and art celebrating the watershed.

Terralingua is an international nonprofit organization based in British Columbia and founded in 1996 by people who came together around a shared belief in the vital value of diversity in nature and culture.
